Heritage High’s varsity softball team extended its undefeated Bay Valley Athletic League record by pummeling Deer Valley on Tuesday in a 14-4 victory.

Sophomore first baseman Aliciana Ramirez went 3-for-4 against the Wolverines, driving in two runs and scoring two more. Sophomore catcher Malia Rivers finished 3-for-5 with an RBI. Junior pitcher Lisa Rodrigues struck out seven Deer Valley batters in a complete-game victory.

The Wolverines (1-9, 0-2 BVAL) led 1-0 after the first inning, but Heritage (8-5, 3-0 BVAL) struck back with seven runs in the next frame and scored in every inning until the end.

Deer Valley sophomore outfielder Kristen Londerville went 2-for-3, scored a run and stole two bases.

Freedom 9, Clayton Valley 1

Freedom senior center fielder Malena Padilla, senior second baseman Katie Wood and junior third baseman Brianna Simpson all went 2-for-4 in Saturday’s 9-1 win over non-league foe Clayton Valley in the Newark Memorial Tournament. Previously, the Falcons dropped a 5-0 game to the host Cougars.

Last week Freedom came out on top over BVAL rival Liberty 8-0. Padilla and Wood each went 3-for-4. Padilla drove in three runs, while Wood was credited with two RBIs. Liberty senior Andrea McCary led the Lions offense with two singles.

GOLF

Liberty defeats Heritage

In last week’s match between Liberty and Heritage at The Golf Club at Brentwood, the sixth-seeded golfers made all the difference, not the low-card players at the top of the ladder. Tied at 206, the Lions earned the victory on the strength of Josh Noriega’s 47, which beat Patriots Gilbert Tarin’s 66.

The win gave Liberty, looking to compete with defending champ Deer Valley and rising Heritage, a 5-2 record in BVAL play.

VOLLEYBALL

At the recent Northgate Junior Varsity Invitational, Deer Valley and Pittsburg placed second in their respective pools and went on to the Gold Division bracket. Antioch wound up in the Silver Division. The Wolverines beat Ygnacio Valley and Granada in pool play, but lost a close three-set match to De La Salle. The Pirates ended up losing to Livermore, while Deer Valley fell to Foothill.

Deer Valley head JV volleyball coach Mike Capps said sophomore setter Victor Capili, sophomore libero Adrian Giron and freshman outside hitter Thio Grigley all contributed outstanding performances.

The Deer Valley JV team will compete in this weekend’s Campolindo Invitational, held in Moraga.
