East County boxing fans get to see fighters from all over California step into the ring for a showcase event Saturday at Brentwood’s LA Boxing, 8650 Brentwood Blvd. Doors open at 1 p.m.; fists start flying at 2.

LA Boxing owner Joseph Garcia is anticipating an exciting event. “People are fighting, trying to get records to go to Olympics and Junior Olympics,” he said. In attendance to scout the fighters will be boxing-world bigwigs such as Ben Delgado, who has worked with champion Manny Pacquiao; Nevada State Athletic Commission fight manager Barbara Manos; and Tom Gafney, president of the United Combat Association.

Local talent includes Brentwood resident Amy Polvorosa, who took up boxing about a year ago. She joined LA Boxing merely to stay in shape – now she’s facing a match that many eyes will be watching.

A different story is that of young kickboxer and Brentwood resident Sammy Sosa, who brings a decorated martial-arts background as a past IKF Northern California champion. Sosa will be making his debut as a boxer on Saturday.

In total, 17 fights are on the card. As long as the fighters make their weights, all the bouts will go off as scheduled. The weigh-in begins at 10 a.m. and spectators are welcome.

Garcia expects the event to last between two and three hours. “I want to introduce popular boxing to Contra Costa County,” he said. “I want to bring a new sport in to the area, which is boxing. And I want to introduce the gym, get people to know it and see that it’s a good place to host fights.”
