Nearly 100 bowlers set foot on the lanes at Brentwood’s Harvest Park Bowl recently for the second annual Bridging the Gap doubles tournament in which 49 teams comprising one senior bowler (over 55) and one youth bowler (from 3 to 20) competed. Ed Stewart, 94, and Casey Collins, 3½, were the oldest and youngest competitors.

Two elements made the tournament especially appealing: its nine-pin no-tap format (knocking down nine pins on the first ball counted as a strike); and the worthy cause: proceeds went toward youth scholarship awards.

It’s was Julian Lopez’s first tournament. The 8-year-old began with a case of butterflies but soon got over it, striking and high fiving with his senior partner Anita Hendrickson. Four bowlers – seniors Jim Padilla and Duane Wilson, and youths Tim Barton and Justin Van Dicken – earned perfect no-tap 300 games.
