A familiar face among social justice groups and activists, McGarvey is recruiting both walkers and pledgers. “We walk not only to raise funds for ending hunger, but to raise awareness of the severity of the hunger crises,” he said. “The need is greater than ever, and this is an opportunity to help meet the needs together and to show our concern.”
Since 1969, CROP Hunger Walks have been raising money to help stop hunger. Currently, more than 2,000 communities across the United States join in Hunger Walks each year.
CROP Hunger Walks are interfaith hunger education and fundraising events sponsored by Church World Service. Funds are used locally and internationally to support hunger-fighting development around the world. Twenty-five percent of funds raised go to local food banks; the remainder to global efforts. The organization’s mission is “ending hunger one step at a time.”
The goal this year is to raise $300,000. An estimated 4,000 people are expected to participate in the Bay Area Walks, in which friends and other sponsors support walkers with donations.
Oakland and Pleasanton will kick off the weekend’s CROP Hunger Walks on Saturday, April 28. Alameda, Berkeley, East County (Pittsburg and Antioch), Fremont, Marin in San Rafael, San Francisco, Sonoma, the South Bay and Peninsula in San Jose, and Vallejo will follow with their walks Sunday, April 29.
