To clue in new and longtime residents alike, the city is teaming up with the service organization Degree of Pocahontas to host Community Awareness Day. The event, which features fairs for businesses, service and youth organizations, and senior health, is scheduled for Saturday, May 15 at the Oakley Civic Center Plaza, 3231 Main St.
The Degree of Pocahontas has been hosting Community Awareness events for 13 years, but Oakley Economic Development Analyst Leeann Lorono said the city decided to join forces with the organization to help expand the event, in hopes that more people will attend.
“Oakley has a lot to offer its residents, so Community Awareness Day is a one-stop shop that will help introduce the city’s many resources to the entire community,” said Lorono. “For some reason, a lot of people don’t know about all the things that Oakley has to offer, but there are so many successful businesses, services and organizations that the community should be aware of. So we hope this event will educate the residents about all the resources in their own backyard.
“The idea is to have all of these Oakley resources in one spot. Maybe you think you’re interested only in the services fair, but you might find out information about a business you didn’t know about, or a youth program that kids in your neighbor might be interested in. The event is purely informational. We’re just trying to get the word out that Oakley is open for business.”
The event will feature informational booths from 22 local service organizations, 15 businesses, 20 health service providers, and six youth programs. While the overall event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the senior health fair will conclude at 2. The health fair, sponsored by the East County Senior Coalition, will feature free blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings. No appointment is necessary but the screenings will be administered on a first-come first-served basis, so Lorono recommends that interested participants arrive early.
