Youngsters age 5 to 13 desiring to learn tennis – and try their hand at a little competitive play – can register for an introductory tennis program at an affordable price that doesn’t require club membership.
The Oakley Youth Tennis League at the Diamond Hills Sports Club and Spa begins Saturday, April 24 and runs for five consecutive Saturday afternoon sessions through May 22, culminating in the League All Star Tournament on June 5. Each two-hour session starts at 1 p.m. Registrations received by April 2 cost only $60; $70 for those received April 3 through 6. To enroll, visit www.youthtennisleague.net. Specifics about the program format can be found at www.quickstarttennis.com.
What makes this program so popular is that children learn tennis fundamentals using the USTA’s Quickstart program format, designed to get a child rallying and playing in a short period of time utilizing age-specific equipment, shorter court dimensions and modified scoring. Last year, nearly 400 young players took part in the program held at Spare Time clubs in Elk Grove, Folsom, Gold River, Lodi, Natomas, Oakley, Roseville and Sacramento.
According to League Administrator Patrick Rutz, “As a former tennis pro and father of 7-year-old boys, I know kids want to compete and play on teams. This program finally brings those concepts together. Our boys had a great time last year and it didn’t break the bank.”
Diamond Hills Sports Club and Spa is located at 1510 Neroly Road in Oakley.
