Oakley’s Police Department collected 106 pounds of prescription medication last Saturday as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Drug Take-back Day.

“I’m pleased with the positive response we received from residents,” said Oakley Police Chief Bani Kollo. “I think it speaks for the need to continue to offer convenient drug disposal opportunities. Be assured we’ll continue to offer additional opportunities as they’re made available to us.”

Drug Take-back Day is an opportunity for residents to purge their homes of unwanted or expired prescription drugs. Residents were allowed to drop off prescription drugs anonymously – no questions asked.

The event was made possible by the passage in Congress of the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act, which amended the Controlled Substance Act in 2010. The amendment allows an “ultimate user” of controlled substance medications to dispose of them by delivering them to entities authorized by the attorney general to accept them.

While regulations for implementation of the act are still being drafted, the Drug Enforcement Administration plans to continue collaborating with local law enforcement agencies to host drug take-back events every few months.
