The Wheelchair Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides wheelchairs to those in need, joined the worldwide effort to aid the people of earthquake-ravaged Haiti, delivering 6,000 pounds of medical equipment, food, clothing, water and other supplies, plus 40 wheelchairs and 18 doctors, nurses and Wheelchair Foundation volunteers.

In the accompanying photo, provided by former Brentwood City Councilman Pete Petrovich (a member of the Wheelchair Foundation Advisory Board), volunteers are seen unloading the DC-3 aircraft in Haiti at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27. The aircraft belongs to the group’s founder, Ken Behring.

The Wheelchair Foundation brings independence to those deprived of mobility by war, disease, accident, natural disaster or advanced age. The total cost to purchase, ship and deliver a wheelchair to a person in need worldwide is $150. Each $75 donation the foundation receives helps deliver a wheelchair and supports its humanitarian mission.

To make a donation, log on to www.wheelchairfoundation.org or call toll-free 877-378-3839. Those interested in a specific country or who wish to participate in a distribution trip or sponsor a container of 100 to 280 wheelchairs should call 925-648-3844 or 925-648-3860.
