Boy Scouts working on their merit badges can get a little help and some freebies at the same time this weekend.

REI Brentwood is hosting a Scout Merit Badge Night on Sept. 11 from 4 to 9 p.m. The event will feature free merit badge clinics, door prizes, discounts for group purchases and a 15 percent discount coupon for every Scout who participates.

4 p.m.: Tracking Historic Merit Badge

Learn the original requirements as written in 1911. The badge was discontinued in 1952 and brought back for the BSA centennial. Register at www.rei.com/event/10917/session/13493.

5:30 p.m.: Cycling Merit Badge

Whether you’re a beginner or have been cycling for years, you’ll learn more about your bike and what it can do by working on this badge. Register at www.rei.com/event/10918/session/13494.

7 p.m.: Backpacking Merit Badge

Scouts will learn what equipment to carry on their backs, what knowledge to have in their heads, and how to travel and camp without leaving a trace. Register at www.rei.com/event/10876/session/13492.
