Pets aren’t for everyone, but if you decide to welcome a furry friend into your life, consider adopting a cat or dog from a local animal rescue. Several pet rescues are located right here in East County, offering dozens of cats and dogs looking for a forever home.
The weekend of June 1, local rescues Animal Rescue Recon, HALO (Homeless Animals’ Lifeline Organization), Delta Animal Safe Haven, HARP (Homeless Animal Rescue Program), Cat Support Network and Umbrella of Hope will participate in Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days. Hosted annually by the Maddie’s Foundation, the event is a free pet adoption fundraiser. Last year, Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days facilitated the adoption of 2,601 dogs and cats in Contra Costa and Alameda counties.
For every pet adopted, local rescue organizations receive funding to maintain their programs. Run by volunteers, the rescues depend on funding from the Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days event to continue saving animals from overcrowded shelters.
