Under the scrutiny of radar-gun-toting scouts behind home plate on Tuesday, Heritage pitcher Paul Blackburn put on a show.

Blackburn threw the school’s first no-hitter, walking two, in the Patriots’ 6-0 victory over Deer Valley. Blackburn, a senior who will attend Arizona State next year, squared off against Wolverines’ ace Ricky Delgado in a much-anticipated duel.

The Patriots scored one run in the first inning, then exploded for five more in the second, giving Blackburn more than enough wiggle room. He fanned eight Wolverines, facing the minimum 21 batters over seven innings. Blackburn needed a scant 72 pitches to get through the game.

“We kind of had a plan of trying to pitch backward, figuring they were going to be geared up for his fastball,” Heritage manager Kevin Brannan said. “When you give him any kind of a lead, he has the ability to be ultra aggressive.”

Delgado, who has earned a scholarship to Cal State Fullerton, lasted three innings, walking five. He was charged with three of Heritage’s six runs, battling a sore right shoulder.

The two will likely face each other again when the Patriots travel to Deer Valley in the season finale on Wednesday, May 16.

Liberty 14, Antioch 0

Liberty is riding high off two big victories this week. On Monday, the Lions defeated San Ramon Valley 4-2 in Danville, handing the Wolves their fifth loss of the season. Liberty scored two in the first inning, but San Ramon Valley tied it up with runs in the fourth and sixth.

The Lions chalked up two more runs in the seventh, making for a happy bus ride back to Brentwood. Junior Johnny Hemenes started the game, going five solid innings. Senior Stevan Zaharias earned the win in relief.

On Tuesday, Liberty started the month off right with a 14-0 demolition of BVAL foe Antioch.

The Lions scored in every inning but the second. Zaharias led the charge with a three-run homer in the sixth. Junior outfielder Derian Goins, junior first baseman Tristan Prybylinski and sophomore utilityman Cody Luther each went 2-for-3. Sophomore pitcher Mitchell Zamora fanned five Panthers in five innings.

Freedom 5, Pittsburg 4

A seventh-inning rally by Freedom propelled the Falcons to a 5-4 victory over Pittsburg on Tuesday.

Facing a 4-2 deficit heading into the final frame, Freedom scored three runs to earn the win. TJ Briggs and Joe Starick each went 2-for-3 for the Falcons. Briggs drove in one run; Starick two. Bryan Wargo earned the win in relief.
