Discovery Bay resident Virgil Koehne solved last month’s History Mystery by correctly identifying the images in an old postcard.

Koehne, the Discovery Bay water and wastewater manager, and his colleague, Sue Heinl, identified all four images in the postcard. Clockwise from the top left, are a view of the boats from resident Brian Dove’s backyard, the Discovery Bay Marina, the lake aerator providing additional oxygen, and a magnificent sunset view of Mount Diablo taken from the morning side of the mountain.

Koehne also located three additional postcards of Discovery Bay of the same era plus a box of early sales brochures, model descriptions and advertising material. No early postcards were included in the material, so the hunt for the elusive Discovery Bay postcard published prior to 1980 continues.

Koehne said the town would like to feature early history of the community at the proposed civic center, and encourages residents with early ephemera to bring them forward.

Longtime homeowners Peter and Verna Normann responded that their property was purchased in 1975 when Wells Fargo Bank was begging customers to buy lots. But the Normanns don’t recall any postcards – only foldout, full-page colored ads.

For correctly identifying the History Mystery, Koehne earns a donation made on his behalf to the John Marsh Historic Trust.
