The All-American Soap Box Derby is back on Main Street in Rio Vista on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 2 to 5 p.m.

“It’s such a thrill to see the kids in their Derby cars race down Main Street to Front Street while hundreds of festivalgoers cheer them on,” said Matt Rubier, president of the Rio Vista Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a family fun event that you will not want to miss.”

Participants provide their own regulation Soap Box Derby vehicle, car and driver. Combined weight must not exceed 250 pounds, and wheel diameter may not exceed 12 inches. Cars must be inspected and approved in advance. For inspection locations, call the Chamber at 707-374-2700.

First-place winners from the Custom Build and Kit Car Classic divisions will race for the title of Grand Champion.

The cost to participate in the Soap Box Derby is $10 for kids ages 7 to 15 only. Entry forms are available at www.bassfestival.org and at the Rio Vista Chamber of Commerce, 6 North Front St., Rio Vista, 94571. All entries must be received by Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The Soap Box Derby was relocated from a side street to Main Street last year, enabling many more festivalgoers to enjoy the double-elimination racing event. To make this possible, the Soap Box Derby sponsors – Stewart Industrial Supplies, Napa Auto Parts and McPherson Crane & Rigging – built a ramp to allow the cars to gather enough speed.
