Sometimes you’re in the mood for a quick burger but crave the quality of a diner-style burger. Fans of local favorite Lumpy’s Diner will be happy to hear that their favorite diner has opened a new location offering just that: Lumpy’s Diner Express, located at the Brentwood Plaza shopping center on Brentwood Boulevard.

Lumpy’s Diner Express is a twist on the local favorite, offering a modified lunch and dinner menu including such mainstays as burgers, sandwiches and fries. Owner Jeremy “Lumpy” Sturgill describes the new location as “an All-American burger at a fast-food pace.” The 60-seat establishment, which provides indoor and outdoor seating, is every bit as eclectic as Lumpy’s other locations, featuring tons of signage, murals, two TVs and a Kid’s Corner complete with a dry-erase board for kids to doodle on.

Sturgill’s concept for the Express began about two years ago. The timing wasn’t right back then, but he kept it in mind. In 2011, the Antioch restaurant’s success led to a second location, in Pittsburg.

Even so, Sturgill was cautious. “I know what happens when you grow too big,” he said, pinpointing the downside of success: losing the essence of what makes you great.

Sturgill also acknowledges that greatness isn’t a one-man show. “You’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with,” he said, expressing pride in his staff and showering special praise on his wife, Marci. “She’s definitely the backbone. Whenever I do something, she’s way involved.”

Soon after their wedding in October, Lumpy told Marci that he wanted to go for the Express store. She gave him her full support and has been instrumental in helping develop the Brentwood location, which they view as a test case for the Express concept. Since its opening in May, the Lumpy’s Diner Express has been well received.

While the Express location is the newest member of the Lumpy’s Diner family, another highly anticipated member is about to arrive. Marci is pregnant with the couple’s first baby, due in early November. The eager dad-to-be confesses to having recently ordered a custom stroller for the baby. “I have a reputation for being crazy and I just want my kid to have the coolest stroller possible.”
