Five valedictorians and one salutatorian – all young women – said goodbye to classmates and teachers last week, closing the door on their high school experience and looking ahead to the future.
Playing off a superhero theme that included Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Flash and Wonder Woman, the five valedictorians took their turns at the podium, drawing correlations between the larger-than-life fantasy figures and the oh-so-normal travails of teens.
“Just as Spiderman learned to balance his personal life with his public persona, we too have struggled with our identities,” said Jana Cicerello.
“Like Batman we have lived through the good times and the bad, but sharing ourselves with all of our friends got us through,” said Amanda Dwyer.
“And like Superman we all have our disguises, but also like Superman we find our strengths deep within our souls,” added Kaitlin Simarro, whose twin sister and fellow valedictorian Meghan channeled superhero Flash.
Julia Surges rounded out the five speeches with her Wonder Woman analogy, concluding, “The speed bumps (of high school) were your challenges, but in the end your determination was your real power.”
Antioch High School Principal Louie Rocha praised the 77th graduating class of Antioch High for its successes over the past four years. “Antioch High has a long history of greatness,” said Rocha. “Some of our alumni have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, members of the Secret Service protecting our presidents, and members of the armed services. We have had 10 alumni go on to play for the NFL and some have won Academy Awards … You are about to make your marks, and the alumni of Antioch High School are proud of you. As the saying goes, once a Panther, always a Panther.”
Antioch Unified School District Superintendent Donald Gill congratulated the Class of 2010 on its accomplishments and offered some thoughts for the future.
“We celebrate you tonight because you are our hope and our future,” said Gill. “If you are open to life and all it brings, you will be satisfied beyond measure.”
