This has proved to be a memorable and successful year for the Delta Patriot cheerleaders, who followed up a 2008 Jamz Hip Hop national title performance in Las Vegas with a Pee Wee Performance Cheer division title at the 2008 United Spirit Association's (USA) Junior Nationals competition.
Despite a scoring error, the Patriot cheerleaders also took fifth place in the nine-team Pee Wee Song division at the USA Junior Nationals, held at the Hyperion Aladdin Theater in Disney's California Adventure.
Patriot cheer athletic director and head competition coach Grissell Barros received a phone call from USA president Mike Burgess following the event informing her that the score sheets from the competition were incomplete and that her team officially placed fifth.
We sure went out with a bang this year. I could never imagine in three years in existence that we would have two national titles, numerous trophies and an outstanding support system. This is what every coach lives for their team, said Barros.
The USA Junior Nationals champion JV Cheerleader team consists of cheerleaders Alexa Ojala, Jasmine Napoles, Jayden Tolentino, Jaylynn Glenn, Haley Schwitters, Moniquica Harrell, Brooke Culbreath, Rowena Taguiam, Chanelle Patterson, Jordan Patania, Adriana Fregoso, Nadia Lahham and Brooklyn Douglas, and coaches Tuli Ojala, Ivy Tolentino, Jordana Glenn and Grissell Barros.
This year was also the third consecutive year the Patriots competed at the Jamz National Cheer Competition in Las Vegas, and the team went into the event with its sights set firmly on a first-place finish after taking second in the Hip Hop division a year ago. Garibay, the Patriots' junior coach and Showcheer/Hip Hop choreographer, said she and her mother had stepped up the difficulty of the girls' routine and were proud of how the girls met that challenge.
I'm very proud of the girls on how far they have come, and to come home with jackets and first place in Hip Hop was a perfect ending for the season, Garibay said. I couldn't ask for anything more from these girls. I'm so proud of all of them.
The Delta Patriots championship Varsity Hip Hop squad included Rhandi Bautista, Brooke Culbreath, Britney Daley, Shyla Giannotti, Jaylyn Glenn, Bridget Hardy, Moniquica Harrell, Nadia Lahham, Talia Lahham, Morgan LeForce, Sophia Ortega, Jayden Toletino, Katelyn Wilson and Brianna Young.
