In the next few months, district ratepayers will be hearing about P2 – activities that reduce the amount of pollution in our environment. For ISD, it means promoting the use of less-toxic substances, implementing conservation techniques and reusing materials rather than putting them into the waste stream.
ISD is already offering P2 programs, such as a recycling service that accepts kitchen grease – often poured down the drain, where it causes pipe problems or pollutes the environment – and instead converts it into clean-air bio-fuel.
The district is also working on education programs to help ratepayers keep the Delta clean by using less toxic cleaning products and understanding what substances shouldn’t be poured down the drain.
ISD’s water recycling facility is all about P2. Rather than clean recycled water with chlorine and other harsh chemicals, the district uses membrane filters and ultraviolet light.
