Hot August Nights, scheduled for Aug. 20, will be a worship night filled with activities, food and live music from local Christian artists. While guests enjoy the fun, members of Golden Hills Church, Calvary Community Church, and the Family Worship Center will be collecting donations for the East County Community Outreach Center and the Tijuana shoe project, an effort organized by local church groups to raise money to buy shoes for the poor in Mexico.
Local Christian artists Men 4 Him and Chosen are scheduled to perform at the event as well as the Lanisa Keith Band.
The Lanisa Keith Band, recording artists based in Southern California, will kick off the night of food and fun at 6 p.m., followed by a performance by local quartet Men 4 Him at 7:15. The concert will come to a close with a performance by Brentwood-based Christian rock band Chosen, which takes the stage at 8.
Event organizer Leonard McCurley said that while some churches are natural rivals, the Hot August Nights event is all about supporting people in need: “The shoe project for Tijuana has been going on for a few years. These people are the poorest of the poor. They live in what is known as the Tijuana Dump, so we collect donations to purchase new shoes and then we take the shoes down in time for Christmas. Last year, we took 3,000 pairs of shoes down to Tijuana and the line of people waiting to collect a pair of shoes was a mile long.
“When I found out that the program hadn’t received any donations yet this year, I knew I had to do something, so I got together with some friends and we got the idea for a worship night, and we’re bringing churches together to help support a good cause.”
The shoe project accepts only monetary donations. The churches have an arrangement with a company that sells new shoes for $5 per pair, so supporters of the project don’t need to buy a new pair of shoes to donate.
Brentwood’s Sticky Chicken and Ribs will be serving food at the event, and McCurley said the restaurant has offered to donate a portion of the night’s proceeds to the shoe project: “Hopefully, we’ll have a lot of people come out and buy food to enjoy during the show. We’re so grateful that Sticky Chicken has agreed to donate some of their profits from the night. Hopefully, we’ll be able to kick off the shoe program with their donation. We’d like to exceed last year’s donation if possible, and we hope this event will help us reach our goal.”
To support the East County Community Outreach Center, guests are asked to bring blankets, sleeping bags and men’s and women’s coats to be donated to the homeless and needy of East County. The Community Outreach Center, located in Antioch, serves free meals to those in need and provides clothes and amenities to those down on their luck. New and gently used items will be accepted.
In addition to live music and good food, Hot August Nights will also provide a children’s activity area featuring crafts and face painting, so there’s something for the whole family.
Hot August Nights Under the Son will be held Friday, Aug. 20 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the parking lot of Ace Hardware and National Flooring, 8890 Brentwood Blvd. For more information, call McCurley at 925-389-2323.
