A wish for Fairyella

When East Bay resident Martha Haris was diagnosed three years ago with stage-four breast cancer, she decided to write a children’s book based on the character Fairyella the toothfairy, which Haris created for her daughter Kimberli. Haris would share tales of Fairyella’s adventures as bedtime stories, but never wrote them down. Before she died, she wanted to compile the stories to share withthe world, so she wrote the stories – but needed an illustrator to bring Fairyella to life. Haris contacted the East County nonprofit An Elderly Wish and asked for help to complete her book. An Elderly Wish grants wishes to seniors with terminal illnesses. This was an unusual wish for the organization to tackle, but Director Mary Chapman took it on. After a year and a half working on the project, Haris passed away. Kimberli, determined to fulfill her mother’s dream, found a work-for-hire artist. Under Kimberli’s direction, the illustrations were completed and the book self-published with help from Chapman and donations from friends and family. Kimberli grew up believing in these fairytales and wants to share her love for Fairyella with children all over the world. “The Adventures of Fairyella the Tooth Fairy and Dragonfly Floyd” is available at www.fairyella.com. For each book sold, Kimberli is donating a dollar to the St Jude’s Research Hospital. For more information, call Kimberli at 925-808-8097 or e-mail fairyella1@gmail.com.

I agree the investigation should have been done as soon as this accusation/incident occurred. This is no matter to take lightly. The Brentwood Police Department did their investigation and cleared the teacher of any wrongdoing. We need to have faith in our Police Department and the decision they made. Teachers do not decide to become teachers because they are well paid; they are not paid enough! They are expected to be teachers, disciplinarians and caregivers, giving all their effort for the best interest of their students. Teachers do this out of the kindness of their hearts and the love they have for our children. Teachers are often taking the place of parents that do not seem to have the time or energy. Teachers are people that help build our children and make them who they are and what they will become. This is a very serious responsibility and needs be taken seriously. They need to report any type of questionable behavior even if it seems to be minor or already has been addressed/discussed with the parents of the child. Teachers are human and they make mistakes just like all of us. We were not there that day and do not know what happened. I do have to say that Loma Vista is one of the best schools in Brentwood. They have teachers that devote themselves to our children. Why the administrative leave for Ms. James, I do not know. I feel that she should be back at Loma Vista where her students want her. I remember Ms. James when I was in 5th grade at Garin, when she was a teacher. My children attend Loma Vista and they love Ms. James just as I did when I was a child. She is a wonderful person! As for Merrill Grant, “In an economic climate that has good teachers working for poor pay and fewer and fewer benefits, the expenditure of $300K to a man who was fired is almost criminal in its stupidity”.

So let me get this straight.... The teacher who allegedly committed child abuse was cleared of wrongdoing by the police. In other words, it appears that the accusation is unfounded. That may not be the case, but it appears so. In the mean time, a principal remains on administrative leave and a superintendent was fired. Why wasn't an investigation done to start? What is the reason for administrative leave for Ms. James and why was Superintendent Merrill fired? Something doesn't pass the "smell" test.
