For Miss 2006 Discovery Bay Teen Jenna Cecil, the world of pageantry has been a way of life and a passion that began five years ago. "Pageants are an experience of a lifetime," said the 18-year-old Liberty High School senior, who received the title in March. "With this experience, I walk off with not only more poise and self confidence, but also lifelong friendships."

Another reason Cecil competes is for the opportunity to express her opinions publicly. "My public platform this year as Miss 2006 Discovery Bay Teen is targeted to girls of all ages and has to do with self-esteem," she said. "I want other girls to know that no human being is perfect and flaws are what make them unique. I would like girls to understand how to feel secure with imperfections and help boost their confidence. If I could change one just one girl's life, the whole experience would be worthwhile.

Cecil describes pageantry preparation as self-discipline, hard work, dedication, persistence and practice. "Above all, I think to do well in pageants you must have a passion for them," she said.

The next step for Cecil is the Miss 2006 California Teen Pageant on July 8 at the Del Valle Theater in Walnut Creek. "For this competition, contestants are judged on an interview, personal style and in swimsuit and evening gown categories," she said.

Cecil is currently looking for sponsors for the Miss 2006 California Teen Pageant and needs a minimum of $600, which includes the entry fee and funds for such things as makeup and her evening gown. All sponsorships are tax deductible and each sponsor receives a listing in the official program and tickets to the event. "If all goes well," said Cecil, "I could be competing for Miss 2006 Teen of the Nation later this year in Las Vegas."

A Discovery Bay resident since November, Cecil lives with her godparents, Kim and Joe Ciampa. While living in New Mexico in 2004, she was named Miss Teen Albuquerque and in 2005 competed for Miss Cities of America Teen.

In the fall, Cecil will attend Sonoma State University, majoring in broadcasting. In addition to her duties as Miss 2006 Discovery Bay Teen, she works two jobs, one at the Cold Stone Creamery and the other for Commodore Events in Alameda.

"I actually just filmed a commercial for Commodore as a bride," she said. "It was recently aired on KRON-4 on the segment Bay Area Bargains. I love modeling and acting and am hopeful I can pursue those some day."

Those interested in being a sponsor for Cecil can reach her at 240-1300, by cell phone at (925) 597-2270 or by e-mail at jenna_cecil@yahoo.com. She is also looking for events and community activities in which she can represent Discovery Bay as Miss 2006 Discovery Bay Teen.
