The Eastern Contra Costa County Transit Authority (Tri Delta Transit) embarked on its fifth new route in three years. Tri Delta Transit Route 201 runs between Pittsburg/Bay Point BART and Concord BART. Service began on Aug. 27.

Major stops along Route 201 include Mt. Diablo High School and John Muir Medical Center (formerly Mt. Diablo Medical Center). More than 30 of Route 201's stops are located in Pittsburg and Bay Point.

The new route provides more than service to downtown Concord. A free transfer agreement between Tri Delta Transit and County Connection opens the door to all of Central Contra Costa County. There are now nine additional County Connection routes to which a Tri Delta Transit customer can transfer for free with an interagency transfer slip. Interagency transfer slips can be obtained from the Tri Delta Transit driver.

Until now there has been no public bus service between East County and downtown Concord. Users of public transportation had to rely on BART to get there. While BART is still a viable alternative for getting to Concord, Tri Delta Transit's Route 201 provides another option. "Our customers can utilize their existing Day Pass and get all the way to Concord and back," said Director of Marketing Mike Furnary. "Some people will still opt for BART," he continued. "It remains a bit faster than the bus, but many will find the cost savings and the free transfers to County Connection to be enough to select the bus. Either way, we all win when someone chooses to use public transportation."

A Day Pass on Tri Delta Transit remains just $2.25. With free transfer agreements with County Connection, it is now possible for someone to get all the way from Discovery Bay to Sun Valley Mall on public transit for only $2.25. Prior to Route 201 being in place, a similar trip on public transit would have cost a minimum of $5.40.

Tri Delta Transit's Route 201 operates 36 times per day, Monday thru Friday. Service starts at 6:10 a.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m. "We will be monitoring this route very carefully," said Tri Delta Transit CEO Jeanne Krieg. "We expect it to be a very popular route, so if the demand for service is strong, we'll look into adding more runs when the next schedule comes out."

Tri Delta Transit provides over 2.5 million trips each year to a population of nearly 230,000 residents in the 225 square miles of Eastern Contra Costa County. Including Route 201, Tri Delta Transit operates 15 local bus routes Monday through Friday, three local bus routes on weekends, express commuter routes, door-to-door bus service for senior citizens and people with disabilities, a 49ers Sports Service, and numerous scheduled services for community events.
