Director/producer ver Mehr will be in attendance at the Bay Area premiere of the cinematic saga of Earl Muntz, one of the 20th century's zaniest and most flamboyant entrepreneurs, a fun-loving rascal who played as hard as he worked.
Muntz made and lost three multimillion-dollar fortunes, competed with RCA and Motorola with his Muntz TVs, produced America's first sports car (the Muntz Jet), literally invented car stereo, and still found time to hang with Howard Hughes, Mickey Rooney, Ronald Reagan, Gene Autry and Clark Gable, date Ava Gardner, film noir icon Jane Greer and comedienne Phyllis Diller, and marry and divorce seven glamorous women.
Antioch Classical Theatre Company performs "A Midsummer Night's Dream" on July 21 and 22 at 8 p.m., and on July 23 at 2 p.m. Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers, feuding fairies, aspiring actors, and a misapplied love potion comes to Antioch for the first time, starring two members of the Actors' Equity Association. Join that mischievous sprite Puck as he watches the players play, the lovers fight and his king and queen quarrel. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students.
On Saturday, July 29 at 8 p.m., Barron Edwards' Motown '60s Music Revue takes you on a musical journey back to when the great Motown Sound bridged the gap across color lines and had everyone dancing in the streets. The group features artists performing as the Supremes, the Vandellas, the Miracles, the Temptations, Ike and Tina and more.
This popular show sold out in 2005 and will surely do so again this year. Tickets are $30 for Gold Circle; $22 for adults; $18 for seniors (62 and older); and $15 for children (under 18).
The original Brat Pack classic, "The Breakfast Club" (rated R), will be shown Saturday, Aug. 12 at 8 p.m., with a performance of '80s tribute rock band Replica at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults; and $5 for seniors and children (under 17) if accompanied by an adult.
The '50s will be the focus on Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. with a showing of "American Graffiti." A classic car show will be on display outside the theater. Tickets are $6 for adults; and $5 for seniors and children (under 17).
The 31st annual San Francisco Stand Up Comedy Competition (warning: adult language) will be held Saturday, Sept. 16 at 8 p.m. This is a preliminary round to San Francisco's prestigious comedy tradition. Gold Circle tickets are $30; adults, $20; and seniors, $18.
Joni Morris presents "Legendary Ladies in Country Music" on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. Critics have fallen all over themselves heaping praise on Morris' tributes to the great Patsy Cline, whose look, style and, most of all, sound, she captures magnificently. Morris also celebrates the music of the Judds, Connie Francis, Patti Page and more. A charmer from the word go, Morris welcomes you with her big voice and even bigger smile. Mariachi Divas will perform on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. Mariachi Divas is a unique, multicultural ensemble of women of Mexican, Cuban, Samoan, Argentinean, Colombian, Japanese, Puerto Rican, Swiss and Anglo descent. The Divas have created their own style of music called "ranchengue," a unique combination of a ranchera played in merengue fashion. Gold Circle tickets are $35; adults, $25; seniors, $20; and children, $15.
Randy Newman will perform a solo concert on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. Newman is a premier American songwriter, arranger, singer and pianist known for his satirical, immaculately written pop songs and for his many film scores. He long ago established himself among our sharpest and most caustic wits and one of the real masters of modern American music. This concert is rescheduled from February. Tickets are $40 to $75.
Famous People Players performs its Black Light Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. Performed entirely by individuals with developmental disabilities, the show features stunning life-sized puppets in a magical glow-in-the-dark black light theater weaving an enchanting tapestry of extraordinary visuals and sunlit imagination. Tickets are $25 for adults; $22 for seniors; and $15 for children.
