For the first time since 2005, Liberty High’s varsity tennis team hoisted the Bell Trophy last week, beating Freedom 6-3.

The Lions made a clean sweep of the doubles matches, winning all three. Liberty also won the top singles match, as No. 1 Janelle Sparks bested Falcon counterpart Nicole Zanarini by scores of 6-0, 3-6 and 5-7.

“We had girls crying,” said Lion head coach Priscilla Macksoud. “This was big for them. In most or a lot of the sports at Liberty, our rivals have dominated for years. It’s a big deal.”

Macksoud said she was also excited that with wins over competitive Bay Valley Athletic League teams such as Heritage and Antioch, Liberty is in good shape to make a run at the title. After the Lions topped the Patriots last week, their record stood at 7-2 overall and 6-2 against BVAL foes. Freedom, which leads the league, started the week 10-6 overall; 6-1 in BVAL.

“We’re right there with them,” Macksoud said. “Our girls are talented; they’re hungry.”
