A special screening of “A Small Act,” a documentary about compassion and perseverance, will be held at Liberty High School next weekend.

When Hilde Back sponsored Chris Mburu, a student from rural Kenya, she never expected to hear from him. After graduating from Harvard and becoming a human rights lawyer for the United Nations, Mburu decided to look for the stranger who changed his life. Inspired by her generosity, he started a scholarship program of his own and named it for his benefactor.

The top students in Mukubu primary school found themselves in the same dilemma that Mburu once faced: they’re bright but can’t afford to pay school fees. Mburu’s fund gave them hope, and the documentary profiles Mburu and his unique quest to offer a better life to those in need.

Liberty teacher Beth Decker said she hopes those who view “A Small Act,” nominated for a Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize, will be struck by how one act of kindness can begin a wave of change.

The film will be screened on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 2 and 7 p.m. at the Liberty Performing Arts Center, 850 Second St. in Brentwood.

Admission to the 90-minute screening is free, and a donation of $5 is requested. A preview of the film can be found at www.asmallact.com.
