Postseason runs blocked in second round

Heritage High, which won the Bay Valley Athletic League girls volleyball title, saw its surprising season end in the second round of the playoffs with a 3-0 loss to the Foothill Falcons in Pleasanton.

The Patriots lost the first game on Saturday 25-19, the second game 26-24 and the third 25-19.

Junior outside hitter Megan Harrity finished with two kills, two aces and two blocks. Senior outside hitter Courtney Quinn made seven kills and two blocks. Junior defensive specialist Ashleigh Reed contributed 15 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Melissa Shatswell fired four aces and made four kills and three blocks.

But stopping Foothill outside hitter Caitlin DeWitt, one of the best players in the Bay Area, proved difficult. According to Patriot head coach Janet Hannigan, DeWitt’s 16 kills on the night were only an average tally for the Falcon star.

Heritage finished the season 25-12 overall and an impressive 9-1 mark in BVAL play. “We’ve had a good time together as a team,” Hannigan said. “They proved me wrong and they made people stand up and take notice, so that was good.”

Amador Valley 3, Deer Valley 0

After winning in the first round, Deer Valley fell to Amador Valley 3-0 in the second round of the North Coast Section playoffs.

The Wolverines fell to the Dons 25-20 in the first game, 25-17 in the second game and 25-20 in the third game. Deer Valley ended its season 17-21 overall and 8-2 in BVAL action.

Senior outside hitter Kara Stark made a team-high 13 kills for the Wolverines as well as four blocks. Senior libero Amanda Wallach led the team in digs with 15.

Granada 3, Liberty 0

BVAL stalwart Liberty took a quick exit from the NCS playoffs, ending its season with with a tough 3-0 first-round loss to Granada in Livermore.

The Matadors swept the match by scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 27-25. Junior outside hitter Ana-silvia Vega hammered eight kills for the Lions. Junior defensive specialist Taylor Morgan finished with two aces. Sophomore outside hitters Taylor Scriven and Casady Brown each made 10 digs. Liberty finished the season 13-28 overall; 7-3 against BVAL opponents.
