As Travis Credit Union begins its 60th year of service this fall, it proudly acknowledges every one of its 180,000-plus member-owners who have helped the credit union reach this milestone.

Travis Credit Union is a nonprofit financial cooperative financial institution that offers a multitude of financial services to those who live or work in Solano, Yolo, Sacramento, Placer, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Napa, Contra Costa, Alameda, Sonoma, Colusa and Merced counties.

In the autumn of 1951, Travis Air Force Base Federal Credit Union opened its doors in a makeshift base office and began serving the financial needs of military and civilian personnel at the base. Throughout the next 60 years, under the careful stewardship of generations of board directors, the credit union experienced strong growth in assets and membership. Today, with $1.8 billion in assets, it’s the 13th largest credit union in California and among the top 100 in the country.

Equally important, the credit union is a strong partner in the cities and neighborhoods it serves, and is regularly recognized for service and community leadership.

During the first five years of the credit union’s history, much of its work focused on organization and membership growth. In December of 1951, the credit union had 68 members and $2,105 in deposits. In 1965, membership was again expanded to include all other civilian employees and military personnel assigned to TAFB’s region of the Air Force. In 1974, the credit union changed its name to Travis Federal Credit Union.

Over this past decade, Travis Credit Union has continued to expand into communities in its 12-county region. On May 2, it will open new locations in Antioch, Benicia and Richmond. These former Metro 1 Credit Union branches will become Travis Credit Union offices when the merger is completed on April 30.
