Seasoned campers and first-time adventurers are invited to grab their pup tents and smores, and head to Cornell Park in Discovery Bay next month for a backyard experience like no other. On June 25, as part of the Great American Backyard Campout – an event coordinated through the National Wildlife Federation – locals can enjoy a night under the stars with their family and friends for free.

The overnight, sponsored by a number of local organizations, including REI – which is providing free rentals of tents, sleeping bags and bed rolls while supplies last – will include nature hikes and crafts, games, campfire songs and stories, and plenty of stargazing.

But the real purpose of the party, according to Event Captain and Coordinator Amanda Dove, is to simply enjoy an evening under the stars. “What’s really great about this event is that it offers an opportunity to people to just relax, unplug and enjoy some time with their loved ones,” said Dove. “We’re looking forward to a night under the stars and a great time.”

CSD President Kevin Graves believes that for a community never short on activities and events, the sleepover is special because it offers a unique way for residents of all generations and backgrounds to socialize.

“I think that it’s great that the citizens of Discovery Bay are looking for ways to come together as a community,” said Graves, who along with the rest of the CSD board voted to waive the registration fees at Cornell Park for the event. “We have board members and staff that are participating to show support and take part in the fun. As more people interact and get to know each other better, Discovery Bay becomes a more welcoming and safer community.”

The event begins with set-up and registration on Saturday, June 25 at noon and ends with breakdown and cleanup by noon on Sunday. Boy Scout Troop 514 will assist campers with setting up and activities. The event features a barbecue Saturday night and a free pancake breakfast Sunday morning, hosted by the Discovery Bay Mom’s Club.

The Great American Backyard Campout is part of the National Wildlife Federation’s Be Out There campaign. This year, the federation celebrats its 75th anniversary as America’s largest conservation and advocate organization for wildlife and wild places.
