Starting June 12 and running through the end of September, the Brentwood Parks and Recreation Department is presenting Playport to Fun – a summerlong program designed to introduce residents to the city’s more than 50 parks featuring a new location each week.
“The idea for the program was to come up with a way to familiarize everyone with our parks, and not necessarily just the biggest or the newest ones,” said Recreation Supervisor Barbie Gary. “Our whole department worked to come up with a way to introduce people to all our parks, because people tend to just visit the ones near their homes. We wanted to offer them a way to hit some of the other parks in the area as well.”
And to make it a little more fun, the parks and recreation department has attached themes to some of the locations, such as Dog Day Afternoon and Dig up Some Bones (that’s dinosaur bones) at Kaleidoscope Park. The activities are family-friendly and free.
On June 12, the first event kicks off with Story Walk at Sunset Park; a scavenger hunt event in which pages from a children’s book are placed on stakes along a half-mile path in the park. Children will read the first page of the story and move on to the next marker and read that page, continuing on until the full loop is made.
“This is something that would be perfect for moms’ groups looking for a fun, outdoor event,” said Gary. “Each week there will be an opportunity to enjoy a theme, such as Play Today the Bocce Ball Way at Apple Hill Park, or Splash Play at Blue Goose Park. Some of the events are staffed and some aren’t, but they are all free and work very well, we think, with the theme of Brentwood as a Playful City.”
