Discovery Bay resident Troy Mayhood, 12, was riding his bike last Friday on Newport Drive at about 6 p.m. when he swerved around a trailer only to collide with an oncoming vehicle. Troy was thrown approximately 30 feet from the collision. From Timber Point Elementary School, near the accident, Troy was transported by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Oakland.

Troy suffered a broken nose, broken jaw and broken femur in his right leg as well as road rash over much of his body. He was on a ventilator until early Saturday morning and remained in the hospital’s intensive care unit until Monday. He has been moved to a regular room, but as of Wednesday his family had not been given a release date.

When Troy awoke on Saturday morning he wanted to know two things: where are my flowers, and did I make the evening news?

No flowers are allowed in the ICU, so Troy has been showered with stuffed animals and balloons. When he was told he didn’t make the evening news, he wanted to know if he at least made the paper.

Well, Troy, it appears you have. All of us at The Press wish you a speedy recovery, but do us a favor: next time you’d like to make the paper, please call us and we’ll suggest a number of less painful ways to go about it.

Good news...he came home late Wednesday and is one happy camper. He still has a long road to recovery, but after all he has been through during this touch and go time he is HOME!! Welcome Home Troy!
