California’s coast and waterways are no strangers to the accumulation of trash and debris, but East County residents can fight that trend on Saturday, Sept. 17 as part of the state’s largest volunteer event: California Coastal Cleanup Day, an annual beach and inland waterway cleanup.

From 9 a.m. to noon, East County residents are invited to once again take a stand against pollution and clean up trash along Antioch’s waterways. For details about volunteer sites, e-mail jhaaswajdowicz@ci.antioch.ca.us.

In 2010, more 82,500 volunteers, including a record 375 from East County, removed more than 1.2 million pounds of trash and recyclables from local beaches, lakes and waterways. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by Ocean Conservancy, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events in the world.

Coastal Cleanup Day is an ideal way for families, students, service groups and neighbors to join in caring for their fragile marine environment and show community support for shared natural resources.
