Starting Jan. 1, 2012, drivers will face stiffer penalties for committing traffic violations on a 19-mile stretch of Vasco Road between Livermore and Brentwood.

On Tuesday, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors designated that part of Vasco Road – from Interstate 580 in Livermore to Walnut Boulevard in Brentwood – as a Safety Enhancement-Double Fine Zone. The passing of Assembly Bill 348 gave the popular road that designation, which will last from Jan. 1, 2012 to Jan. 1, 2017.

“Alameda County has worked hard to make this road safer for drivers through the numerous improvements we’ve done along Vasco Road,” District I Supervisor Scott Haggerty wrote in a press release. “I believe that this double-fine zone will extend our current efforts.”
