It wasn’t easy, but the Heritage girls volleyball team survived the first round of the North Coast Section playoffs with a victory over visiting Castro Valley.

The Patriots won 25-18 and 25-17 in the first two games, then lost games three and four by scores of 25-19. Heritage edged out the Trojans in the final match 15-13. Senior setter Chelsey Hancock recorded 25 assists, 13 digs and four blocks. Senior outside hitter Savannah Shelton contributed 13 kills, five digs and four blocks.

The sixth-seeded Patriots advance to host California, the No. 3 seed, on Saturday.

Other BVAL results
Deer Valley 3, Irvington 1

Deer Valley bounced back from a slow start to topple visiting Irvington in four games – 20-25, 25-13, 25-16 and 25-12.

Senior outside hitter Marissa Malone notched 14 kills and 12 digs; junior outside hitter Chanelle Washington made five kills and 12 digs; and junior setter Megan Santos finished with 28 assists. Head coach Lou Panzella was especially pleased with the all-around effort of senior outside hitter Rachel Roskelley.

The No. 8 seed Wolverines face a tough draw on Saturday: top-seeded Foothill on the road.

Monte Vista 3, Liberty 0

Liberty’s season, in which it went 7-3 in league play, has come to an end after a defeat at the hands of Monte Vista in straight sets – 25-16, 25-19, 25-21.

Senior Ana-Silvia Vega contributed 10 kills and 15 digs for the Lions; junior outside hitter Taylor Scriven made 15 digs; and freshman middle blocker Idara Akpakpa was credited with five blocks.
