Rev. Derek Miller, Sr. passed away Nov. 28 following a long illness.

The East County resident had a lengthy career that included working as a teacher and vice principal in the Pittsburg Unified School District. He was a basketball coach and minister of music at Lighthouse Christian Center in Pittsburg, where he also served as a multi-cultural pastor. As an ordained minister he served at Pittsburg’s First Baptist Church and St. Mark’s Baptist Church.

One of the highlights of Derek’s career was the development – with his wife Linda – of the Rainbow Choraleers, a multicultural performing arts program focused on promoting cultural diversity in music and the arts. He received many awards in the community for his leadership and music ministry.

Derek graduated from Valparaiso University in 1977 with a degree in business administration, and earned his master’s degree at Andersonville Theological Seminary.

He leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Linda Miller, and children, Derek junior, Erica and Jason.

Services will be held Monday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Antioch Church Family, 55 E. 18th St. A Celebration of Life Service is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m., also at the Antioch Church Family location.
