Independence High School students Kathryn Buffim and Joe Gabrielli smile for the camera – along with their proud parents – after winning the first round of the Brentwood Lions Club’s 2012 Student Speaker Contest.

This year’s topic is “What could America of yesterday teach the America of tomorrow?” Kathryn now advances to the Zone competition held March 7 in Bethel Island, where she’ll compete for $10,000 in college scholarships.
