In its first year, the Catholic Community Garden of Brentwood, located on the premises of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, was a resounding success. The garden’s yield approached 3,000 pounds of fresh vegetables for the St Vincent de Paul food pantry in Brentwood.

The vegetables are distributed to any resident in need in the Brentwood area. Many volunteers pitched in with their time, talent and treasure to develop the garden during its first year of operation. Be it irrigation, seeds, plants, vehicles or tools, someone was there to provide it. In addition to new cash donations, the garden had received new donations of two garden carts, a rototiller, bricks, gravel and several hundred packets of seeds from Renee’s Seeds.

Enthusiasm and support for the garden from parishioners, as well as individuals out of the parish, has been remarkable. Many volunteers enjoy the therapeutic benefits of gardening, as it allows them to focus on the garden and forget their problems.
