Oakley offers more sporting opportunities

The City of Oakley is partnering with Diamond Hills Sports Club and Spa to offer tennis classes for children and adults held at Diamond Hills, 1510 Neroly Road in Oakley.

Junior tennis for kids 4 through 10 is held Mondays, April 2 through May 7 from 4 to 5 p.m. The fee is $58 for Oakley residents; $68 for non-residents.

The class is designed for first-time and experienced players alike. Kids are grouped based on skill level. Appropriate quick-start tennis equipment will be used to ensure the success of each child. Instruction covers warm-up and hand-eye coordination drills as well as fundamentals of proper stroke development. Kids learn to rally, score and play out points in no time

Junior development tennis, for kids 8 through 12, is held Mondays, April 2 through May 7 from 6 to 7 p.m. The fee is $58 for Oakley residents; $68 for non-residents. The class is designed for students who have some tennis experience and are comfortable with all basic shots. Motor skills and hand-eye coordination drills are continued along with further stroke developments and point play.

Beginning adult tennis, for those 18 and older, runs Wednesdays, April 4 through 9 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The fee is $84 for Oakley residents; $94 for non-residents. The class is designed for the first-time adult player. Instruction covers all skills essential to get players on their way to competing in United Tennis Association League matches.

Oakley is also partnering with Biddy Sports to offer basketball for children 4 through 6. Children learn the fundamentals of basketball, develop social skills in a fun, safe and family-oriented environment and are introduced to team sports. The location is outside at the Oakley Recreation Building, 1250 O’Hara Ave. on Saturdays, April 14 through May 19, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The fee is $60 for Oakley residents; $70 for non-residents and includes t-shirt and award. The registration deadline is April 9, and volunteer coach training is April 10.

The class provides non-competitive basketball, in which children participate at their own level and ability without keeping score. Participants take part in an hour of fun group warm-up, practice with their team and then play a game. Parents can get involved by volunteering to coach their child’s team; all training is provided; no experience is required.
