This year marks the 25th anniversary of Relay For Life, an event that raises money to prosecute the war on cancer. This year, Oakley will be hosting its inaugural Relay at Freedom High School on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to Sunday, May 3 at 10 a.m. A Relay meeting will be held on Feb. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Comfort Suites in Oakley. Brentwood’s fifth annual Relay for Life event will host its kick-off meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Nines Restaurant, 100 Summerset Drive in Brentwood. Participants will be introduced to a mini-relay event and learn about forming teams, volunteering and sponsorship opportunities. Teams can register at a discounted price.

The Brentwood Relay For Life event will be held at Liberty High School on Saturday, June 13 from 9 a.m. to Sunday, June 14 at 9 a.m. The Brentwood evetn begins and ends one hour earlier this year due to potential heat and to accommodate the event’s survivors and caregivers.

The American Cancer Society offers a new volunteer program for California this year and Brentwood resident Wanda Zimmerman has been selected as Hero of Hope for the Greater Bay Area. Wanda is a breast cancer survivor and has been a committee member of the Brentwood Relay For Life since its inception. Wanda takes to heart the Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back theme used by the American Cancer Society. Helping to raise money, share the services offered and progress made in the fight against cancer.
