A man who led police on a high-speed chase through Oakley to Bethel Island and opened fire on sheriff’s deputies with a semi-automatic weapon died at the scene early Tuesday morning from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to Oakley Police Chief Bani Kollo, an Oakley officer attempted to stop 19-year-old Bryan Akers-Davis for a traffic violation around 1 a.m. near East Cypress Road and Knightsen Avenue, but he refused to stop.

A chase ensued and officers pursued Akers-Davis to the vicinity of Sugar Barge and Piper roads in Bethel Island.

“The subject then began firing at officers with an assault-type weapon,” said Kollo. “Several police cruisers were damaged, but officers did not return fire and no one was injured.”

Akers-Davis drove off again and officers issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby Bethel Island residents. The SWAT team was called in and Akers-Davis’ vehicle was later located at the Bethel Island Golf Course.

“Once we determined that he was still in the vehicle, officers attempted to make contact but he was non-responsive,” said Kollo. “Officers eventually approached the vehicle and found that he was deceased, with a single gunshot wound.

“We don’t know at this point why he engaged police.”

The investigation is being conducted by the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office in conjunction with the Homicide Division of the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office.
