The Contra Costa County Fair – May 31 through June 3 – is just around the corner, and this year’s extravaganza features predictably exciting live music on the Main Stage, entertaining shows, delectable food, traditional exhibits, youth livestock and free Kids Zone.

New for 2012 are exhibitor handbooks – available online only. But whether you participate as an exhibitor, donate your time as a volunteer, promote your product or service as a vendor, the fair offers myriad opportunities for a late-spring fling.

Held at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds, 1201 W. 10th St. in Antioch, the fair is open Thursday, May 31 and Friday, June 1 from noon to 11 p.m.; Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Ticket may be purchased at the fairgrounds Thursday and Friday from noon to 9:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The fair’s 2012 free Concert Series offers a variety of genres for all ages and musical tastes:

Thursday, May 31 – The Spazmatics

The Spazmatics lends its geeky charm to performing ’80s hits complete with “nerdography” and “spaztic” movements. They demonstrate the common ties between ’80s new wave and today’s popular music.

Friday, June 1 – Nathan Owen Motown After Dark

Nathan Owens is backed by a dynamic seven-piece band, two backup singers and a horn section performing the biggest hits from the Motown era. The high-energy show is a three-ring circus of singing, dancing and fantastic costumes.

Saturday June 2 – Rockin’ Down the Highway

Rockin’ Down the Highway is a Doobie Brothers tribute band whose repertoire spans the many decades and styles of the legendary California group – from the classic rock of “China Grove” to the Grammy-winning pop of “What a Fool Believes.”

Saturday June 2 – Cream of Clapton

The Detroit native and singer/songwriter/record producer Kevin Russell’s unique blend of blues, rock and soulful guitar playing makes for an optimal tribute to the legendary Eric Clapton, packed with all his hits.

Saturday, June 2 – Blaze of Glory

If you love Bon Jovi, this show is a must-see. Blaze of Glory looks and sounds so much like the real thing that even the most discerning Bon Jovi fans are amazed.

Sunday, June 3 – FRESH

FRESH plays the best in Latino, Rock, R&B and Hip Hop combined into one fantastic show. Come out to the Main Stage, dance, and enjoy the sounds and energy that this talented band brings to the stage.

Sunday, June 3 – Hispanic Musical Celebration

The tradition of music and dancing of the Hispanic community is on display at the Fiesta Stage. This year’s performers include Los Acuario de Mexico, Komando de la Sierra, Alacranes, Los Kinos, Banda Los del Pueblo, 3 Ball California, comedian Tony Montana, and La Tequilera.
