A large cast is busy rehearsing Excelsior Middle School's fall production of "The Velveteen Rabbit," to be performed later this month. The play is based on the book by Margery Williams, first published in 1922. The heart-warming tale teaches about love and loss through the eyes of a stuffed rabbit, and his quest to become real through the love of his owner.

A new twist to this year's production is Director Kathy Tickner's decision to direct two

casts simultaneously, allowing a maximum number of students the opportunity to be a part of the dramatic arts. Each cast will give one performance each night. Co-directors Lori Fulton and Dana Lee are assisting in coaching the children in theater and performance techniques, as well as character development.

The curtain goes up nightly at 6 and 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26 through Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Excelsior gymnasium. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors, students, and children 2 and older. Children under 2 are admitted free. Excelsior Middle School is located at 14401 Byron Highway in Byron. For more information, call 634-2128 or e-mail Tickner at ktickner@byron.k12.ca.us. Tickets will also be available at the door.
