How do you spell relief? B-Y-P-A-S-S, as in the Highway 4 Bypass, specifically the Oakley segment of the bypass, which is now a matter of weeks from completion.

The segment will connect the existing bypass segment at Lone Tree Way with Highway 4 at the point where it turns north past the Hillcrest Avenue exit.

The bypass segment is officially due to open in mid-January, according to Project Manager Dale Dennis. But he's hopeful that the opening date can be moved up, depending on whether the contractor and the weather cooperate.

Once opened, the bypass will provide much-need congestion relief by taking much of the truck and through-traffic off of Main Street in Oakley, Brentwood Boulevard in Brentwood and Hillcrest Avenue in Antioch.

These photos show some of the bypass construction work this week in the area of Laurel and Neroly roads in Oakley.
