From chicken and enchiladas to steak and sushi, around 300 Taste of Brentwood diners sampled delicious fare on Saturday as they trekked along Oak and First streets and jumped on a shuttle in search of delectables from some of city's finest eateries.

Sponsored by the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club of Brentwood and Tri Delta Transit, the $15 tour ($25 for couples) set diners in motion to taste cuisine from eight eateries: Brentwood Fine Meats, Sticky Chicken and Ribs, Sylvia's Cafe, A Fine Time for Tea, Hiro's Steak and Sushi, Grazie!, La Fuente Mexican Restaurant and Gooseberry Fool.

It was a beautiful day for a stroll around the historic downtown, not too cold and not too hot - in fact, the November afternoon was warm enough that many of the guests wore shorts and sandals.

With only two eateries not located in the immediate downtown, participants had no trouble getting around. Several remarked that concentrating the taste tour in downtown was more to their liking.

"Last year it was spread across the city. This year it's concentrated and easier to get to everything," said Melinda Solorzano of Brentwood as she sat in the courtyard at Grazie!

Her companion, Yolanda McDaniel of Hayward, said Solorzano invited her to come along on the tour, much to her delight. "I like the variety. This is my very first time. I'd go back to all of them again," she said.

How could the event be improved? "More restaurants," the two women agreed.

The portions were sizeable enough to satisfy the curious, but not too big to discourage them from trekking to the next restaurant or incite a Maalox Moment.

And those diners who made it to all eight restaurants got a chance at winning $100. The Chamber of Commerce announced that this year's lucky winner is Brentwood resident Paul Harrod.
