When it was time for 11-year-old Emelia Hunt of Oakley to cut her hair short, she decided to donate her hair to a good cause. After the O'Hara Park Middle School sixth grader checked out www.locksoflove.org, she knew that Locks of Love was where she wanted her hair to end up.

Locks of Love is a public nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss. Emelia let her mom, Denise (a licensed cosmetologist), do the honors. Mom was more nervous than Emelia. Locks of Love requires a minimum of 10 inches, and Emelia's contribution came to almost 13. The braid weighed in at 9 ounces. Emelia said if she grows her hair long again, she'll donate again, because it helps other kids and will make them happy.
