With the eyes of the sports world squarely fixed on the league, rumors began running rampant over the past couple of weeks. The blogosphere was reporting that John Hill, once thought to be a lock for the first pick in the draft, had signed with bowling super-agent Scott Boras. Known for his tough, some might say underhanded, negotiating tactics, Boras has come under scrutiny lately in the dusk of the A-Rod negotiating fiasco.
The potential signing of Hill seemed to fit nicely with a rebound for the high-powered agent. However, it caused several teams to back off Hill, much like major league pitcher Jared Weaver experienced several years ago when he slipped from a surefire number-one pick down to 12th in the MLB draft. Although the rumors about Hill turned out to be false, several teams, including The Holy Buckets (first to pick), were spooked away from the selection.
Due to Hill's unfortuitous plunge on draft day, the winning powerball ticket wound up in the hands of firefighter - or should we say: soon to be ex-firefighter - Scott Deaver. Not to be confused with the smooth-throwing left-handed former touring pro, Deaver plies his trade with his right, or correct, hand.
When asked what he would do with his newfound riches, Deaver was quick to demonstrate his humanitarian spirit. "There are a lot of starving people in the world," he said. "I just hope that I can help to effect global change with my good fortune. Oh, and I'm buying dune buggies for my entire family."
So what kind of windfall are we talking about for the sand-skipping Deaver family? Well, if recent history comes to bear, they'll be fueling up eight cylinders of summertime fun. Raider JaMarcus Russell, the number-one overall pick in this year's NFL draft, wound up with a six-year, $61 million deal. Meanwhile, Greg Oden, the 7-footer out of The Ohio State University, inked a two-year, $8 million deal with the Portland Trailblazers, including a club option for '09 and '10 that could boost the total to nearly $20 million - $5 to $6 million per year.
As for week one on the lanes, it was Deaver's captain, Xan Halog, who not only led all the ladies, but the entire league in scoring. Xan fired games of 268, 236, 221 and 203 for a league-high (and ladies year-to-date-high) series of 928. Halog paced the Holy Buckets to 37 points on Monday, good for third in the standings. Darrell Hanson, captain and anchor of HansonRealEstate.com, led all men with games of 204, 212, 219 and 258 for an 893 four-game pinfall.
As for the giant contract that Deaver is sure to sign any day now, the jury is still out. There's a lot of pressure to perform once you're tagged with the moniker of number-one draft pick. Deaver will need to learn the playbook fast and prove that he's really worth all that money. One thing is for sure, though: drinks are on him next week.
