Editor:

For two years, our school (Discovery Bay Elementary) has been "going green." At lunch and after school, our students, teachers and staff recycle, recycle, recycle. We have bins at the entrance to our school and by the cafeteria. All proceeds from this program are going toward making our campus beautiful.

During the weekend of Nov. 3, parents and staff volunteered their time to working on the kindergarten area of our campus. Thanks to the generosity of Village Nurseries in Brentwood, the school was able to purchase new trees, shrubs and plants at a 20-percent cost savings. Village Nurseries even came out to the campus after we'd selected our plants to ensure that we had ordered enough, that they were the right plants for the area and that we would have the coverage we desired.

Thanks to all the parents and community volunteers and a special thanks to Village Nurseries for their help in making our campus beautiful. We would also like to recognize the Boy Scout Troop from Timber Point Elementary, who spent the whole day on our campus helping plant a tree in front of our school. Thanks also to Straw Hat Pizza, which supplied our volunteers with pizza, and Subway for helping our volunteers by giving a discount that day.
