The Leadership class at La Paloma High School is asking the community to support its effort to bring a little relief to the troops serving overseas.

"We know people in the military. In fact, my brother is over there," said student Amy Dixon. "We heard that other schools are doing this, but none of them are in our district." Dixon is organizing a drop-off day to collect items to be sent to troops in the Middle East. Drop-off day is set for Saturday, Feb. 9 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The site will be the La Paloma campus, 6651 Lone Tree Way in Brentwood.

Although the school will provide postage, cash donations for that purpose will also be welcome. Donors are encouraged to send letters and cards. Items the troops have requested include batteries (AA, AAA, DD, 9-volt); soap, including bar soap; tooth paste and tooth brushes; dental floss; mouthwash; alcohol wipes and baby wipes; rinseless shampoo; deodorant; hand sanitizers; Chapstick; disposable razors; shaving cream; Kleenex; toilet paper; hand towels; washcloths; sun block; T-shirts (plain white or brown); books, new or used; playing cards; can openers; canned tuna; Spam; Top Ramen; beef jerky; canned fruit; Kool-Aid packages; small juice boxes; energy bars; Pop Tarts; granola bars; oatmeal; candy (no chocolate); gum; Life Savers; mints; and fruit bars.
