Antioch got a nice present on Valentine's Day from the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors when we opened our newspapers and read the article about the board considering a site in our city for a new 500-bed state prison.
This is unacceptable. The proposed site (one of five in the county) is one mile south of Deer Valley High School, near neighborhoods and planned neighborhoods.
Once again, East County is considered a dumping ground. We already have the county dump; now we might get a prison? No way.
I want to encourage all East County residents to join me in contacting all five supervisors by phone, e-mail or fax, and if they can, show up at the board's weekly meeting next Tuesday, and help stop the prison in Antioch.
This is one time I don't mind being labeled a NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard).
