The Byron-Brentwood-Knightsen Union Cemetery District would like to gratefully acknowledge and thank the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charles McCurtain Post 10789, and Marine Corps League, Delta Diablo Detachment 1155, both of Brentwood, for their recent financial help.

These two fine veterans' organizations have donated funds toward the replacement of a monument commemorating both military personnel and civilians who gave their lives during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia and the field in Pennsylvania.

The original plaque, which was donated by the Brentwood Funeral Home, was stolen late last fall. It had been on display in the Veterans Memorial area of the cemetery and presumably stolen for scrap metal due to its all-bronze composition.

The replacement has no metal content and is made with a newer technology. That method allows monument dealers to etch an image on polished granite using a laser beam. The image on the new plaque will be an exact replica of the original memorial.

This incident was one of many thefts, burglaries and vandalism sprees over the past two and a half years that have caused tighter night and weekend security on the cemetery grounds.

Thank you once again to the veterans groups for your kind and continuing support of this local cemetery.
