For the first time, the Bay Valley Athletic League presented awards to its top male and female scholar-athletes. The inaugural winners were Heritage volleyball player Ashleigh Reed and Freedom water polo, wrestling and swimming athlete Zach Irwin.

Irwin, who has earned a 5.0 GPA, will attend UC Davis next year. He is Freedom’s spring sports valedictorian. As a water polo player, Irwin was named to the BVAL’s first team this fall.

Reed, who will attend UC Irvine next year and holds a 4.15 GPA, was a four-year varsity athlete. She’s also a member of the National Honor Society, the California Scholastic Federation and numerous other campus groups.

Each BVAL school nominated two athletes for the award.
