Local artists are opening up their studio doors this weekend, welcoming the public into their creative process on a free self-guided art discovery tour featuring 20 artists at 10 East County locations.
The Artists' Open Studios Tour, sponsored by the Discover Art League, takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 17 and 18 at locations in Antioch, Oakley, Brentwood and Discovery Bay.
This is a unique experience. It gives the public a chance to meet local artists and see the process of creating art, said tour chairman Jack Gaughan. It's also an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the artists' inspiration, and what encourages them to begin a work of art.
The tour features painters, sculptors, photographers, ceramicists, fiber artists, jewelry makers and glass artists, many of whom travel the country showing their work. Gaughan said original works of fine art and crafts will be available for purchase at the studios and complimentary beverages and other refreshments will be offered.
Each artist has their own unique way to entertain the public, said Gaughan, a ceramicist. I'll be carving a work in progress and some painters might have a canvas up on the easel working on a painting. It's a great way to watch the creative process close up.
Gaughan explained how tough it is to sustain a career as an artist in today's struggling economy.
We have several members who currently make a living selling their work and others who supplement their living or retirement with art. It's not easy but it's possible, Gaughan said. There is a lot of art being created in East Contra Costa County and a lot of people who are interested in either collecting art or creating art themselves. An event like this brings those groups together.
